Cummins hosts BAW community event

2/11/2012

Residents of the bustling rural town of Cummins on Eyre Peninsula will focus their attention on the local school oval this morning where many from the community will congregate to take part in CFS Bushfire Action Week (BAW).

The event at the Cummins Area School aims to encourage members of the thriving community and a radio audience in the region, to prepare for the Fire Danger Season.

The morning's activities will also be broadcast on 639 ABC North and West and 1485 ABC Port Lincoln between 8.30am and 11am.

ABC Radio interviews will include the CFS Aviation Services Manager David Pearce who is in the region for aircraft training exercises in both Cummins and Port Lincoln and CFS Regional Commander Kevin May who has welcomed the broadcaster's involvement.

"It's exciting to be reinforcing our long-standing partnership with the ABC in such a practical way that will be both informative and entertaining as we encourage all South Australians to prepare for the fire season by being Bushfire Ready," Mr May said.

Local Government Fire Prevention Planning Officer David "Crockett" Hall will also take part to share his role, including members of the Cummins Emergency Ready Committee, Brian and Wendy Treloar to talk about their valuable community work.

"Fire prevention should begin with an acceptance by everyone in the region that bushfires are a reality of our natural environment and that we all have a personal responsibility to prepare for them by safeguarding ourselves and our families," Mr May said.

"Developing a Bushfire Survival Plan is the first step towards reducing the risk of bushfires and then there are many support programs such as "Firey Women" and community meetings that are held regularly to reinforce people's level of preparedness."

More information about bushfire safety and preparing a Bushfire Survival Plan is available from the CFS website at www.cfs.sa.gov.au or by calling a CFS regional office or contacting one of many local government fire prevention officers, including at the City of Port Lincoln or District Council of Lower Eyre Peninsula.
