Final fire season dates announced

03/11/2017

SA Country Fire Service (CFS) has declared the Fire Danger Season will start in the Mount Lofty, Kangaroo Island and Adelaide Metropolitan Fire Ban Districts on December 1.

Director of Preparedness Operations Leigh Miller said fire season usually starts in these three districts about around the beginning of December.

"It's now important for people living in these areas to prepare for the fire season," Mr Miller said.

"This means clearing vegetation near their homes, ensuring grass is mowed and maintained, clearing gutters etc.

"For those planning to burn excess vegetation on their property, please be reminded to clear a four metre break around any piles, this includes grass and leaf litter. Also have someone in attendance at all times with a sustainable water source in case the fire spreads.

"It is also important to continue monitoring the fire on the days following the burn to ensure it has not rekindled.

"CFS has attended many fires over the past few weeks were pile burns have spread or rekindled and got out of control. These fires can still have devastating consequences so please conduct these burns with caution."

If you would like to conduct a burn once the fire season has begun, you need to contact your Local Council for a permit and to check Environmental Protection Authority restrictions - fires are not allowed on a Total Fire Ban Day.

A Vegetation Pile Burn Code of Practice is available on the CFS website (www.cfs.sa.gov.au).

The announcement comes as nine Fire Ban Districts have already started the season, two are due to start on November 15 and another on November 22.
