CFS Brigade Opportunity for Adelaide Residents

07/10/2016

The South Australian Country Fire Service (CFS) is building its capacity to support existing brigades after a successful trial of a Reserve Brigade in Adelaide's Northern Suburbs.

Reserve Brigades are not deployed on the first report of a fire but are deployed to support crews at major bushfires. They can be deployed to long standing fires in the state, or to support other fire services interstate.

Expressions of Interest are now being sought to potentially create other Reserve Brigades in the Adelaide metropolitan area.

Regional Operations Staff Officer, Brenton Hastie said unlike Country Brigades, those in a Reserve
Brigade don't necessarily have to live close to the station to volunteer and attend fires.

"The trialled Para Reserve Brigade was the first of its kind in South Australia and currently has full membership," Mr Hastie said.

"It has already been deployed to large incidents and now, as a standalone unit is busily training for the upcoming fire danger season.

"The CFS is now looking to determine the level of interest from potential city-based volunteers in order to determine whether more Reserve Brigades could be an option should further funding become available."

"If you were a CFS volunteer who now lives too far from a CFS brigade to remain a member, or you're interested in becoming a volunteer firefighter, we'd like to hear from you."

"Reserve Brigades are intended for use only at bushfires - however training covers the basics of all commonly encountered emergency incidents so our members can deal with most situations which they may encounter."

To be eligible you need to:
- If you live within an hour's drive of Adelaide;
- be interested in being involved in the CFS in a bushfire fighting role in a reserve brigade;
- have the time and fitness required to be a volunteer firefighter.

If interested, please visit the CFS website and follow the links to CFS Reserve Brigades EOI. The Expression of Interest will be open until October the 31st.
