Incident Update
ISSUED FOR CHERRY GARDENS
Multiple warning messages are in place for these incidents.
The CFS is working to contain a major fire that has been burning since just after 4:00pm yesterday. More than 400 firefighters will continue to work today in an effort to bring the fire under control.
Fire conditions are proving difficult due to the erratic local weather pushing the fire in multiple directions.
Residents over the Adelaide Hills and parts of the metropolitan area will have woken to heavy smoke. The community is advised to take care on the roads as visibility will be reduced, while at home close all windows and doors and stay inside.
Rain is forecast to fall on the fireground today, but it is unlikely to be enough to put the fire out. Wind gusts associated with approaching rain and thunderstorms may increase fire behaviour, the community is asked to remain alert to the changing conditions. This fire is expected to be active for at least several days.
There are many personnel on the fireground including CFS, MFS, DEW and SA Forestry. They are being supported by personnel from SA Police, SA Ambulance Service, the State Emergency Service and heavy plant. A specialist high altitude scanning aircraft from Victoria undertook an imaging flight overnight and showed over 2500ha have been burnt.
Crews were backburning overnight. The fire is burning in inaccessible terrain with heavy fuels and much of this fire's edge is still active.
A community meeting will be held today at 11am at the Echunga Football Club, Echunga Road, Echunga. This meeting is to provide community information on the current situation and plans. CFS and SA Police will be presenting.
There are road closures in place and the community is asked to avoid the area. These road closures will continue to change over the coming days. The South Eastern Freeway is still open and currently unaffected. Road closures can be found at traffic.sa.gov.au.
