Incident Update

ISSUED FOR CHERRY GARDENS

This fire has now been contained with no current warning messages active.

More than 2700 hectares of scrub and grasslands has been burnt. Due to the high rainfall, parts of the fireground were unsafe and firefighting activities was reduced to a skeleton crew overnight. Critical work was taken to monitor any flare ups and assess the fire perimeter for hazards and hotspots.

We now have over 150 firefighters from CFS and DEW back on the fireground undertaking operations to secure the fire perimeter, respond to any areas where smoke is present and assess the risk of potential increase in fire activity as the fireground dries out from the rain. This will see ground crews actively walking the fireground with specialised firefighting equipment such as thermal imaging camera to assess the heat still present on the fireground.

These operations will be ongoing for at least the next five days, an increase in temperature by the end of the week will result in the drying of ground fuels and need for our crews to continue working towards making the area safe.

Ground operations are being supported by aerial intelligence aircraft utilising specialised equipment to identify areas where significant amounts of heat remain on the ground. Both this data and the data captured from our ground crews will assist in informing operations over the next few days.

The community is being asked to remain vigilant and up to date with current activity associated with this fire. Whilst the fire has been contained there is still a significant amount of work to be undertaken in order to make the fireground safe. Over the next few days we may see areas flare up causing smoke to be seen coming from the fireground particularly in unburnt island of scrub.

Tiered road closures remain within the fireground to assist in keeping the community safe. At this stage Mount Bold Road is closed to all traffic except for essential services to allow them to undertake important safety assessments. Silver Lake Road/Strathalbyn Road Mylor, Red Hill Road/Longwood Road Longwood, Scott Creek Road/Woolcock Road Longwood, Lamont/Crossing Road, and Cherry Gardens Road/Dorset Vale Road Cherry Gardens are Tier 3 with access to bonafide residents only. These road closures will continue to be monitored and reviewed. For safety reasons, residents are asked not to enter areas with Tier 1 or 2 road closures in place. A current list of road closures can be found at traffic.sa.gov.au.

It has now been confirmed that 2 homes have been destroyed in the fire, 17 outbuildings, 2 vehicles and 2 further outbuildings have been partially damaged. Efforts by firefighters have seen 60 homes saved during the firefight.

DEW is coordinating support for the protection of endangered species of Flora and Fauna within the conservation parks and reserves including species of orchid, southern brown bandicoot and chestnut rumped heath wren.
Local council resources will be in the area today assessing damaged road infrastructure.

When returning to your property residents need to be aware of safety hazards associated with fire affected areas and ensure areas impacted are assessed by a relevant licensed trade person.
