Incident Update
ISSUED FOR CHERRY GARDENS
This fire has now been contained with no current warning messages active.
Crews today continued to undertake assessments to identify and extinguish any hot spots within the fireground. This has enable CFS to identify areas of concern and put in mitigation strategies for the coming days and to gain a more accurate picture of the fire area resulting in a more detailed plot of the fireground. This work has allowed CFS to determine that the fire has impacted on 2565ha of forest, scrub and grassland.
Due to the overnight temperatures and reduced risk of fire escape, a further reduction of crews will be undertaken overnight.
Tomorrow we will again see over 150 firefighters from CFS and DEW return to the fireground including remote area firefighting teams who will walk in to the remote areas to undertake assessments and extinguish and areas of concern.
Firefighters will again be supported by crew utilising thermal imaging cameras and by aircraft undertaking infrared assessments of the fireground and a helicopter with a long line bucketing system to undertake strategic firebombing operations to assist the ground crews.
Forestry SA have also had a presence on the fireground over the last three days by their firefighting crews and heavy plant.
A variety of operations will be ongoing for at least the next five days, an increase in temperature by the end of the week will result in the drying of ground fuels and need for our crews to continue working towards making the area safe.
The community is being asked to remain vigilant and up to date with current activity associated with this fire. Whilst the fire has been contained there is still a significant amount of work to be undertaken in order to make the fireground safe. Over the next few days we may see areas flare up causing smoke to be seen coming from the fireground particularly in unburnt island of scrub. If you see columns of smoke or flames that are unattended on the fireground please call triple 000.
The devastation of bushfires can be far reaching and include injury to animals caught in its path. If you come across injured animals including wildlife please only SAVEM (South Australian Veterinary Emergency Management) on 0477 055 233 to seek assistance as the coordinating agency for injured animals during emergencies.
Tiered road closures remain within the fireground to assist in keeping the community safe. At this stage Mount Bold Road is closed to all traffic except for essential services to allow them to undertake important safety assessments. Silver Lake Road/Strathalbyn Road Mylor, Red Hill Road/Longwood Road Longwood, Scott Creek Road/Woolcock Road Longwood, Lamont/Crossing Road, and Cherry Gardens Road/Dorset Vale Road Cherry Gardens are Tier 3 with access to bonafide residents only. These road closures will continue to be monitored and reviewed. For safety reasons, residents are asked not to enter areas with Tier 1 or 2 road closures in place. A current list of road closures can be found at traffic.sa.gov.au.
