Incident Update
ISSUED FOR CHERRY GARDENS
This fire has now been contained with no current warning messages active.
More than 130 firefighters from CFS, DEW and ForestrySA have returned to the fireground this morning with more than 2500 hectares of scrub, grassland and forest burnt to date. Crews will be mopping up, responding to flare ups and and patrolling the fireground for hot spots using thermal imaging cameras.
Remote area firefighting teams will also be assessing the fireground and will use long hose lays, portable and hand tools where required. Where extra support is needed, a helicopter with a long line bucketing system will be used to put out any flare ups.
Operations will continue for at least the next five days. As temperatures increase towards the end of the week, ground fuels will begin to dry resulting in crews being on standby for any future incidents.
Early this morning, the CFS undertook tactical aerial intelligence gathering using a high definition electro-optical infrared system. This camera provides high level imagery to determine hotspots that are not visible to the naked eye. Still images both in colour and infrared are produced from the camera with all images being georeferenced to allow crews to accurately locate the hot spots. This new technology also provides video imagery and accurate plots of the fire edge.
We ask the community to remain vigilant and up to date with current activity associated with this fire. Whilst the fire has been contained, there is still a significant amount of work to be done in order to make the fireground safe. Over the next few days there may be some flare ups which will cause smoke to be seen from the area particularly in unburnt areas of scrub. If you see columns of smoke or flames that are unattended, please call Triple Zero ('000').
We also ask the broader community to not come into the area over the coming days. Yesterday, a member of the community who was taking photos of the fire affected area injured himself while walking amongst the debris and he then required medical treatment. Please remember the fire affected area still poses many risks.
The devastation of bushfires can be far reaching and include injury to animals caught in their path. If you come across injured animals including wildlife please only contact SAVEM (South Australian Veterinary Emergency Management) on 0477 055 233 to seek assistance. SAVEM is the coordinating agency for injured animals during emergencies.
Tiered road closures remain within the fireground to assist in keeping the community safe. These road closures will continue to be monitored and reviewed. For safety reasons, residents are asked not to enter areas with Tier 1 or 2 road closures in place. A current list of road closures can be found at traffic.sa.gov.au
