Incident Update

ISSUED FOR CHERRY GARDENS

As today draws to a close we have again seen firefighters make good progress in identifying and extinguishing hot spots throughout the Cherry Gardens fire. Both the north eastern edge near Mylor and south western edge near Scott Creek were the main areas of focus today.

Considerable amounts of aerial bucketing operations were used to support ground crews working in difficult terrain. Approximately 46,000 litres of water from 46 loads were strategically dropped on hot spots.

Tomorrow will again see more than 100 firefighters from CFS, DEW and Forestry SA return to the fireground undertaking similar operations which will include the use of ground based thermal imaging which is proving invaluable.

To continue to assess the safety of roadside vegetation, in particular tall trees, more than 28 teams of arborists have been deployed throughout the fireground and will return tomorrow. It is important for community safety that any trees with a significant risk of falling are dealt with prior to community movements returning to normal, however this does not mean further trees won't fall in the future.

Tomorrow will see the warmest and driest day since considerable rain fell on the fireground earlier in the week. As we have seen today, we expect to see smoke from smouldering trees, stumps and fallen branches.

Whilst activities associated with this fire will slowly reduce, we ask the community to remain vigilant and up to date with current activity associated with this fire. Whilst the fire has been contained there is still a significant amount of work to be undertaken in order to make the fireground safe. Over the next few days we may see areas flare up causing smoke to be seen coming from the fireground particularly in unburnt areas of scrub. If you see columns of smoke or flames that are unattended on the fireground please call Triple Zero ('000').

The devastation of bushfires can be far reaching and include injury to animals caught in its path. If you come across injured animals including wildlife please only SAVEM (South Australian Veterinary Emergency Management) on 0477 055 233 to seek assistance as the coordinating agency for injured animals during emergencies.

Tiered road closures remain within the fireground to assist in keeping the community safe. We are asking the broader community to not come into the area. Yesterday, a community member injured himself while taking photos of the fire affected area and required medical treatment. The fireground still poses many risks. These road closures will continue to be monitored and reviewed. For safety reasons, residents are asked not to enter areas with Tier 1 or 2 road closures in place. A current list of road closures can be found at traffic.sa.gov.au.
