Incident Update
ISSUED FOR CHERRY GARDENS
Overnight a number of calls came through from the community reporting trees alight within the fireground. This is normal for this stage of the firefight especially during the night where the glow of smouldering trees, stumps and logs is more visible. We thank the community for reporting these as this assists us in locating areas where there is a need for a concentration of resources. It is expected that this may be seen for quite a few days yet as we work towards making the area safe.
Crews will again be utilising thermal imaging to identify hot spots which are not necessarily visible to the naked eye. This morning we saw a patch of scrub well within the fireground in an unburnt island flare up with flames being seen by crews on the ground.
Not only will our crews need to be mindful of ground based operations but will also need to look up to the skies and see the aerial operations being undertaken to provide aerial intelligence and assistance with hot spot and flare up extinguishment happening across the day.
As well as the many firefighting resources that we have across the fireground from CFS, DEW and Forestry SA, we also again have crews working on track repairs, fencing maintenance, tree assessment and felling happening across the area by DEW, SA Water and Local Government.
To ensure that there is an ability for all these resources to easily come and easily go from the area we again ask the community to avoid coming into the area to have a look and take photos.
Our firegrounds continue to be very dangerous places at this stage of the incident, trees have a tendency to fall or drop limbs with little warning, patches of the ground may still be holding a lot of heat with a risk of burn injuries. We are still seeing flare ups and there are still areas where tree roots continue to burn underground and whilst the ground may appear stable it could collapse under foot and lead to injury including severe burns.
Traffic restrictions are still in place and being monitored, if you find yourself in an area with a lot of activity from emergency services and support services please move out of the area.
SA Water have been continuing with their water quality sampling with an active monitoring program.
Much of the community living within the fire affected area have now returned home and we ask those living and working within this area and surrounding areas to remain vigilant. If you see columns of smoke or flames that are unattended on the fireground please call Triple Zero (000).
For injured animal response please call SAVEM on 0477 055 233.
