Coles Bushfire in the Lower South East

ISSUED FOR COLES

More than 160 volunteer firefighters from across South Australia and Victoria remain on the Coles fireground, near Lucindale in the state's lower south east, which continues to burn freely within control lines. Firefighters will be on the fireground overnight, strengthening control lines and extinguishing hot spots against the fire edge. Firefighter numbers will reduce to 80 on the fireground at 2am, ahead of additional resourcing commencing on the fireground tomorrow morning.

The CFS is continuing to provide support to the families and brigades of two CFS members who were involved in an incident at the Coles fire, involving a falling tree. The incident resulted in one fatality and has left one volunteer in a serious condition in hospital.

The Coles fire is burning in bluegum plantations, scrub, and grassland. The hard work of CFS volunteers has prevented the loss of any private property or assets. CFS volunteers are working alongside and with the support of numerous agencies including NPWSSA, Victoria's CFA, Farm Fire Units, forest industry crews and heavy plant machinery. In addition SA Police, SES, St John SA and Salvation Army continue to provide support to fire fighters and the community.

Aerial firefighting resources continued supporting crews until last light and will recommence operations early Saturday morning.

Smoke will continue to blow across the area and will be seen and smelt by residents across the Lower South East. The community is reminded to monitor conditions throughout the next few days, with conditions expected to continuously change.
