GERMAN FLAT

German Flat Hay Stack Fire

Issued for GERMAN FLAT near TANTANOOLA in the LOWER SOUTH EAST.

The Country Fire Service are continuing to monitor a hay stack fire near Tantanoola in the Lower South East.

Emergency Services were alerted to smoke from forestry cameras located at The Bluff and Carpenters Rocks on Wednesday night the 17th of January. Five crews with 25 firefighters, found approximately 400 hay bales, around a hectare of grass and a Manitou Telehandler (forklift) alight on arrival with an estimated loss of $90,000.

Work is continuing to spread out the hay and extinguish hot spots. This work is causing smoke over German Flat, Tantanoola and Burrungule areas.

The CFS will continue will continue to monitor the fire over coming days due to the predicted upcoming heat.

Hazards may include reduced visibility due to smoke and emergency vehicles operating in the area. People with breathing difficulties should remain indoors and close windows and doors.
