Incident Update

JOANNA

Joanna Fire

Issued for Joanna approximately 15 kilometres south of Naracoorte in the Lower South East of South Australia.

CFS crews supported by Department of Environment and Water and Forest Industry Brigades have contained this fire to approximately 50ha and performed extensive work over the last 24 hours to reduce the risk of this fire spreading to the surrounding forest and properties before the elevated fire weather predicted this weekend.

Due to the challenging conditions of firefighting through the thick scrub at the Eastern and Southern side of the fire, a bulldozer and aircraft have been used to strengthen the control lines. Particular attention has been paid to the south-east border of the fireground as the weather is predicted to potentially threaten the control lines in this direction over the next 24 hours.

Additional aircraft have been stationed at Naracoorte and Mt Gambier today to assist with this fire as necessary. Anyone in the surrounding areas is urged to stay informed and implement their bushfire survival plan.

This fire will continue to cause a lot of smoke in the area, and members of the community are urged to take care of themselves and others in their care who are particularly vulnerable to smoke. Close all windows and doors and if affected, seek assistance from your local GP. At times smoke may impact roads, motorists are urged to keep their windows closed, headlights on and drive in a manner that is safe for the present conditions.

Emergency services may be working on and around roads in the area. Motorists are advised to stay away and please do not enter the area unless necessary.
