Incident Update

KATARAPKO ISLAND

Katarapko Island Fires

Issued for KATARAPKO ISLAND approximately 10kms south of Berri in the Riverland, South Australia..

The Katarapko Island fires are now controlled after nearly 5 days of firefighting efforts, with the management of the fireground is now sitting with the Department of Environment and Water.

The fires, which have burned approximately 84 hectares, have remained contained over the past two days due to the concerted efforts of crews and improved weather conditions. Due to the unique location of this incident, firefighters were transported to the fireground by boat, and aircraft were able to deliver over 221 drops of water, including the use of an aerial bucket, using water surrounding the island. The rainfall today has aided firefighters on the ground, allowing the fire's edge to be strengthened and secured.

At present, these fires do not pose a threat to the community and smoke may still be visible from a considerable distance around Loxton. It is important to stay informed and mindful of the potential health effects of smoke on yourself and others.

Emergency Services may be active in and around local roads, so motorists are advised to avoid the area if possible. For those who must travel, please exercise caution and adjust your driving to suit the conditions.
