LINCOLN GAP TYRE FIRE

ISSUED FOR EYRE HIGHWAY, LINCOLN GAP

The CFS advises that crews are attending to a tyre fire in Lincoln Gap on the Eyre Highway between Port Augusta and Whyalla.

The CFS were alerted to the fire in the early morning of Thursday 23 February 2023. Upon arrival, two large tanks filled with tyres, were found fully engulfed in fire. Crews from CFS and MFS have been actively fighting the fire 24 hours per day.

Firefighters have made significant progress on reducing the impact of the two tank fires and limited crews will remain onsite until the fire has been extinguished and deemed safe for handover.

Smoke, which is being monitored continuously, can still be seen in the area and commuters are advised to close vehicle windows and air vents when driving through.

Due to the materials within the tank, atmospheric monitoring is occurring frequently to assess the contaminants within the smoke, with environmental, livestock and human impacts being of high importance.

SA CFS are currently working closely with the Department for Infrastructure (DIT), SA Water, Australian Rail Transport Corporation (ARTC), SA Police, SA MFS, SA SES and the Environment Protection Authority (EPA) on ensuring a safe resolution of this incident.

To ensure the safety of emergency services personnel, contractors and commuters, speed restrictions are in place along the Eyre Highway. The public are asked to please remain vigilant and follow limits in place.
