Origin / Name: LINCOLN GAP

Lincoln Gap Tyre Fire

ISSUED FOR LINCOLN GAP

Excavation works are continuing today to assist with the tyre fire at Lincoln Gap between Port Augusta and Whyalla on the Eyre Peninsula.

As expected, the use of the extended boom excavator has intermittently caused increases in smoke being emitted from the tank, however, there has been early indications that these operations are having a positive impact in extinguishing this fire. It is expected that the excavator will remain on scene until the end of Monday.

Windy weather and westerly winds shifting northerly will see smoke lift quickly with no impact expected to roadways or rail lines.

The increase in temperature today will make conditions tough on the fireground and crews will be made as comfortable as possible.

Assessments are continuing to be undertaken on the structural integrity of the tanks to minimise the risk of collapse. Atmospheric monitoring is being undertaken twice daily to ensure we are assessing the impact of the smoke on the surrounding area. Environmental Protection Authority (EPA) has also undertaken water sampling and assessments to look at the environmental impacts of this incident.

Speed restrictions remain in place along the Eyre Highway, the community are reminded to close all windows and air vents if driving in the area and smoke is present. There may also continue to be a glow seen from the tanks if driving in the area at night.

Whilst work continues, this area remains an active fireground and therefore the flying of drones over the incident is prohibited and we ask the community to please abide by this for everyone's safety.

Firefighting crews, contractors and supporting agencies are expected to remain on scene for a number of days to come.

CFS continues to work closely with the Department for Infrastructure (DIT), SA Water, Australian Rail Transport Corporation (ARTC),SA Police, SA Metropolitan Fire Service (SAMFS), SA State Emergency Service (SASES), Port Augusta Council and the Environmental Protection Authority (EPA).
