LINCOLN GAP TYRE FIRE
ISSUED FOR LINCOLN GAP
CFS were called to a fire at the Eyre Highway and Lincoln Highway intersection in Lincoln Gap, in the north-eastern Eyre Peninsula on the 23rd of February, 2023.
CFS trucks, supported by MFS trucks remain on scene where two unused concrete tanks are alight.
Within the two 15 metre high tanks, there are discarded tyres and other materials causing thick black smoke in the area.
Traffic restrictions remain in place on both the Eyre and Lincoln Highways around the incident scene.
CFS are asking motorists to monitor and observe these restrictions to support and protect our CFS, SES & MFS crews who are working to resolve this incident, day and night.
Over the course of this fire, crews have been experiencing multiple changes in weather conditions and as such, the highway may be closed due to the lack of visibility, when the smoke is across the highway.
CFS are maintaining contact with the train control agencies due to visibility concerns from the smoke, with CFS continually monitoring air quality around the site.
While there is no fire threat to the nearby township, due to the smoke being produced and unknown potentially hazardous burning materials, locals are advised to stay aware of the smoke in their location and remain indoors where possible with doors and windows closed.
CFS and MFS crews are expected to be onsite for an extended period of time fighting the fire and are being supported by the SES.
