Ngarkat - Incident Update
Issued for NGARKAT in the Ngarkat Conservation Park.
The CFS advises that after six days of hard work by CFS volunteers, National Parks and Wildlife Service personnel, and CFS aviation, the Ngarkat fires have been declared as contained.
Crews have been working day and night in arduous conditions to contain the Mount Rescue and Piggery Track Fires, which started on Monday night, as a result of dry lighting.
The committed efforts of firefighters have proven effective in containing the fires to a total of 9,400 hectares. Of note, crews have been successful in protecting the critical habitat of the nationally endangered Mallee Whipbird and Mallee Emu Wren.
Previous prescribed burns undertaken by National Parks and Wildlife Service also played a crucial role in containing these fires.
National Parks and Wildlife Service crews will continue to patrol the fires for a number of days to ensure the fire remains contained.
Roads are currently open around this incident, no further road closures are expected at this time.
The Ngarkat Conservation Park remains closed to the public until further notice.
These fires do not pose any threat to the community, however smoke may be visible from time to time.
