Incident Update - Pike River Almond Pile Fire
ISSUED FOR PIKE RIVER
The SA Country Fire Service (CFS) advises people in and around the area of Pike River near Berri in the Riverland, that CFS resources continue to work with the landholder to extinguish two large piles of almond product that have been slowly burning over the last two days.
Approximately 15 CFS firefighters and 8 trucks supported by the landholder with heavy machinery, have brought the fire under control and are now working to extinguish the fire. It is expected that crews will remain on scene for the next 24 hours.
The cause of the fire is believed to have been as a result of spontaneous combustion, driven by high winds in the area over the last two days.
It is expected that these piles of almond product will continue to burn for a number of days and may produce some smoke and visible flames during this time. This fire currently poses no threat to the community, and CFS resources supported by the landholder will continue to monitor the scene for several days to ensure it does not pose a risk to the community.
