Almond Husk Fire in the Riverland
ISSUED FOR PIKE RIVER
SA Country Fire Service (CFS) advises that we are currently in attendance at a almond husk fire at PIKE RIVER in the Riverland. This fire is contained to the premises in large mounds approx 10,000 tonnes of almond waste.
This fire began at approximately 08:00 yesterday and is currently smoldering in the mounds and producing large amounts of smoke to drift across the area. CFS and MFS crews were called to the scene yesterday and have remained there today continuing to assist the land holder with extinguishing the fire. At this time the cause of the fire is undetermined and investigations will continue.
CFS and MFS crews will likely be in attendance for at least the next 24 hours to assist in the management of the ongoing slow smoldering fire. This fire is likely to burn for multiple days and CFS will work in with the land holder to ensure it is made safe.
A large column of smoke is drifting in a southerly direction towards Loxton impacting on air quality and visibility in the area. Residents are advised if they are impacted by smoke they should close external doors and windows. Road users should proceed with caution where smoke is impacting on visibility while driving.
The forecast wind change may see the smoke column shift from a southerly direction to the east during the morning then to the north in the evening. Please monitor local conditions.
