HAZMAT Incident Update

ISSUED FOR PORT GAWLER

The SA Country Fire Service (CFS) advises that the Port Gawler Hazardous Materials remains a going incident.

A Non-Bushfire Smoke Advice Message has been issued for this incident which involves the potential for Hazardous Materials being impacted by fire. The fire started as a grass fire and has burnt up to a shed where both the shed and large plastic containers with Hazardous Materials have been burnt.

The grass fire's spread has been halted and crews have been withdrawn up wind of the incident to be clear of any toxic smoke that may be given off by the shed's contents.

A number of firefighting crews are currently at the incident and HazMat resources including a HazMat specialist officer have been responded to the scene. HazMat crews will make an assessment to determine the most appropriate steps to make the scene safe, however, this may be expected to be a protracted incident.

Surrounding areas may be impacted by smoke including potentially toxic fumes and therefore the public are asked to stay clear of the incident area if possible.

A number of isolated structures are in the general area of this incident and residents and motorists passing through the area bounded by Brownes, Port Gawler, Shellgrit and Jeffries Roads should remain indoors/in vehicles with windows and doors closed and any air conditioning set to recirculation in order to not draw any fumes or smoke into enclosed spaces
