ISSUED FOR PORT LINCOLN
The CFS, supported by MFS, is responding to a scrub fire burning at Stamford Drive in Port Lincoln on South Australia's Lower Eyre Peninsula.
More than 80 CFS fire fighters from across the state are working on containing the fire, with support from local retained MFS fire fighters and an additional 14 MFS fire fighters from outside the area.
Crews are being supported by eight aircraft, including firebombers and observational aircraft, SA Police, MFS, SA Ambulance, SES, local council, farm fire units and National Parks and Wildlife Service.
Fire fighters have worked tirelessly throughout the day to contain the fire to approximately 113 hectares. The fire started in scrublands south of Port Lincoln and has burned towards Proper Bay, which has impacted on structures and the local waste management facility.
A significant amount of thick, potentially hazardous smoke is drifting across the area and the community are urged to stay inside, limit movement around the area and close all windows and doors. It's likely this smoke will continue to impact a wider area of the Lower Eyre Peninsula overnight. The CFS and MFS will continue to monitor conditions.
The CFS is deploying crews from regions one, two and four to assist with relieving crews on the fire ground overnight and into the coming days. Several CFS and MFS personnel are also being deployed to Port Lincoln to support the Incident Management Teams.
Milder weather conditions forecast for the next 24 hours are expected to assist crews in containing the fire, which is expected to burn for several days.
