Origin / Name: RAVINE

Ravine Bushfire on Kangaroo Island

ISSUED FOR RAVINE

A Watch and Act message is currently in place for the Ravine Fire.

The two Ravine fires have now merged. It is burning in an east north easterly direction towards the Duncan Fire, which was declared contained on Tuesday 31 December 2019.

The fires started approximately five kilometres apart in inaccessible scrubland south of Cape Borda Road in the Ravine Des Casoars Wilderness Protection Area. It has now burnt through approximately 7528ha of native vegetation along with affecting private property and timber plantations.

Firefighting activities are currently focussing on asset protection where safe to do, along with the support of aircraft. Changing weather conditions and lack of visibility due to smoke may decrease their effectiveness.

Due to local wind conditions there is significant amounts of smoke in the area, this may limit visibility, the smoke is travelling in an Easterly direction towards the township of Kingscote.

The Country Fire Service (CFS) is currently evaluating various options relating to a broader containment strategy of these fires, but it is expected they will burn for a number of weeks. It is likely that the Cape Torrens Wilderness Area, Cape Borda, and large tracts of the Ravine Des Casoars Wilderness Area will be impacted.

There are also concerns held for Flinders Chase National Park if the fire remains uncontained ahead of forecast northerly winds on Friday. The CFS has liaised with the SA National Parks and Wildlife Service in relation to the status of Flinders Chase National park and for the safety of tourist and the community, the park will close from midnight tonight 1/1/2020 until further notice.
