Extreme Fire Danger Friday 3rd January 2020
ISSUED FOR THE RAVINE FIRE, ON THE WESTERN END KANGAROO ISLAND
A Bushfire Watch and Act Message and a Bushfire Advice Message is current for the Ravine fire in the Ravine Des Casoars Wilderness Protection Area, part of the Flinders Chase National Park, on the western end of Kangaroo Island
The CFS would like to advise the community that there is a real risk, the Ravine fire has jumped the control lines and is spreading to the West and South.
CFS, DEW, MFS and Farm Fire Units have been active across the fire ground today and another deployment of CFS crews and appliances are currently on route to Kangaroo Island at the moment. Ground crews may be supported by the water bombing aircraft as needed during the day.
The Ravine fire remains uncontrolled and has now burnt over 10,000 hectares. Strategic back burning has been undertaken in an effort to contain the fire in preparation for today's worsening fire conditions.
Today's weather forecast includes very strong winds and dry, hot weather across the fireground. A fire burning under Extreme fire danger conditions will be fast moving, unpredictable and difficult for fire crews to control.
Properties near the fire ground are most at risk from outbreaks during today's Extreme Fire Danger weather.
Prepare now to leave early.
A relief centre has been established at Kingscote from 09:00am today (3rd of Jan 2020) at the Kingscote Football Club Centenary Avenue Kingscote.
Extensive road closures are in place on the western end of Kangaroo Island. For further updates on road closures visit www.traffic.sa.gov.au
To ensure community safety, Flinders Chase National Park has been closed until further notice, see https://www.parks.sa.gov.au/know-before-you-go/closures-and-alerts.
