Extreme Fire Danger Saturday 4th January 2020
ISSUED FOR THE RAVINE FIRE, ON THE WESTERN END OF KANGAROO ISLAND
The Ravine fire increased considerably during the day on Friday, January 3, due to high winds and high temperatures across Kangaroo Island.
CFS, MFS, DEW and fire suppression aircraft have been working extensively and will continue to work across the fireground over the coming days.
The fire on the western side of the island moved across areas such as Flinders Chase, Vivonne Bay, Hansen Bay, Kelly Hill, Western River and Stokes Bay towards Parndana in the central area, Stokes Bay in the north and Seal Bay in the south.
Fire in the western area remains active with a Watch and Act Message currently in place. The fire remains a threat because of continually changing conditions in the area.
A Bushfire Advice Message has been issued for the eastern area of the island including Kingscote, Penneshaw, Emu Bay and American River to ensure the public is aware that the fire in western areas is uncontrolled.
Extensive road closures are in place to allow crews to move across the fireground and to ensure safety of the public. People are asked to avoid these areas as a significant threat remains across the fireground. For information on road closures visit www.traffic.sa.gov.au.
Townships of Kingscote and Penneshaw are considered areas of safety and those choosing to leave their homes should relocate to these areas.
A 24-hour relief centre has been established at the Kingscote Football Club, Centenary Avenue, Kingscote.
It is important for the community to stay alert and monitor conditions. Put your Bushfire Survival Plan into action. Make sure you consider the safety of vulnerable people, the preparedness of properties and the location of livestock.
