Residents to stay alert at the Ravine Fire

ISSUED FOR ISSUED FOR THE RAVINE FIRE ON THE WESTERN END OF KANGAROO ISLAND

The Ravine fire continues to burn on the western end of Kangaroo Island, with a fire edge running between the south coast (west of Vivonne Bay) and the north coast (around Stokes Bay). It is also actively burning in remote inaccessible terrain in the Flinders Chase National Park. A Bushfire Advice message is currently in place for this fire.

Today as the weather warms up, we are expecting the fire to flare up along the eastern edge and in unburnt patches. Residents get ready need to put their Bushfire Survival Plan in place and take action to stay safe. Particular areas of concern include:
- Snug Cove
- Between Middle River and Cape Dutton
- Stokes Bay and Lathami Conservation Park
- Bark Hut Northwest of Parndana
- Andamel and Mt Taylor Conservation Park northwest of Vivonne Bay

This morning, CFS aircraft observers are checking the whole fire area to guide today's fire fighting efforts in preparation for worsening fire weather later this week. Today, crews will be focussing on securing the eastern edge of the fire putting out hotspots and mopping up, as well as suppressing new fires.

The fire has now burnt a total of 156,929 ha with a perimeter of over 320 km. This fire continues to be very active and the community needs to stay alert and watch out for new fires in their area. For emergencies and to report new or unattended fires call Triple Zero (000)

CFS will continue to monitor fire activity in remote areas of Flinders Chase National Park, which is burning in inaccessible and complex country. Later in the day, CFS are planning to do some controlled burning in the Mt Taylor and Andamel areas to help protect communities.

There is significant activity across the fire ground and around Kangaroo Island supporting this effort. Defence has support SES to move the large Base camp to an area near the Kingscote airport for operational smoothness. Services are assessing damage to telecommunications, water and power utilities and it may be some time before these are returned to full capacity.

Roads outside of the burnt areas have been reopened. Take care in the area, there may be roaming livestock, wildlife and conditions are smokey. Inside the fire ground road closures are in place to ensure the safety of emergency service crews and the public. People are asked to respect road closures as a significant risk remains across the fireground.
For information on road closures visit www.traffic.sa.gov.au.

Residents need to be aware of hazards on the fireground when returning to their properties. Watch out for falling trees, burning trees and underground roots, damaged or blocked roads, fallen power lines, smoke, ash and possible asbestos contamination. There are large patches of unburnt ground in the area and people need to monitor their surrounds for flare ups. Take action to stay safe.

A relief centre is open from 7am to 7pm at the Kingscote Football Club, Centenary Avenue, Kingscote. For further information about a variety of services, ring the Disaster Recovery Hotline 1800 302 787. For emergency assistance for livestock and animals call 1800 255 556.
