Residents in Vivonne Bay advised to relocate due to increased fire risk

ISSUED FOR THE RAVINE FIRE ON THE WESTERN END OF KANGAROO ISLAND

Today (Wednesday, January 8, 2020) South Australian Police (SAPOL) are undertaking a pre-emptive relocation of people in Vivonne Bay on the South Coast of Kangaroo Island.

This is a pre-emptive relocation due to the increased fire risk in the next two days. Currently, there is no immediate threat to life or property.

With increasing wind, warmer weather and going fires on Kangaroo Island, this situation is likely to change.

SAPOL will be advising all people in the area to relocate out of Vivonne Bay to a safer place. People will not be permitted to re-enter the area until Friday, January 10, if it is deemed safe to do so.

SAPOL will be patrolling the area to ensure people comply with this advice to ensure the safety of community and visitors.

There will be more roads closed from 3pm this afternoon and existing road closures will be more stringent. For more information, visit www.traffic.sa.gov.au.

CFS is taking this action due to high fuel loads and poor defendability under these conditions should the fire break control lines and threaten Vivonne Bay.

Communities to the north including Andamel and Parndana are advised to put their Bushfire Survival Plan into action. If you are not prepared, it is advised that you relocate early to a safer place before conditions worsen tomorrow.

Visitors who need to relocate are advised that there is free camping and caravaning on the Kingscote and Penneshaw ovals (within CFS Bushfire Safer Places).

For people who require assistance, an Emergency Relief centre is open from 7am to 7pm at the Kingscote Football Club, Centenary Avenue, Kingscote.

For updates visit the CFS website (www.cfs.sa.gov.au) or phone the Bushfire Information Hotline on 1800 362 361.

This message will be updated as the situation changes or before: Jan 08 2020 22:00
