Origin / Name: RAVINE
Prepare for Severe Fire Danger on Kangaroo Island on Thursday, January 9, 2020
ISSUED FOR THE RAVINE FIRE ON THE WESTERN END OF KANGAROO ISLAND
The Ravine fire continues to burn on the western end of Kangaroo Island, with a fire edge running between the south coast (west of Vivonne Bay) and the north coast (around Stokes Bay). It is also actively burning in remote inaccessible terrain in Flinders Chase National Park.
Efforts in the past week have focused on securing the eastern fire edge, putting out hotspots and mopping up in preparation for the deteriorating fire weather. Progress has been made, however there are still areas of major concern and a real risk of outbreaks threatening communities tomorrow (Thursday, January 9, 2020).
The highest fire danger will be in an area west of a line from Smith Bay on the north coast to Vivonne Bay on the south coast. People in this area need to be vigilant, stay alert, monitor the CFS website and warning messages, and prepare for a fire in their area.
People need to put their Bushfire Survival Plan into action. If you are not prepared, relocate early to a safer place before conditions worsen.
At the request of CFS, and as a result of this risk, South Australian Police (SAPOL) have directed people in Vivonne Bay to relocate to a safer place . Re-entry to Vivonne Bay will not be permitted until Friday, January 10, if it is deemed safe to do so. SAPOL will be patrolling the area to ensure people comply with this advice to ensure the safety of the community and visitors.
Given the forecast of severe fire danger and going fire in the landscape, visitors are encouraged to stay in and around Kingscote and Penneshaw tomorrow. Kangaroo Island Council is providing free camping and caravanning on the Kingscote and Penneshaw ovals for campers who wish to relocate to a Bushfire Safer Place.
Many roads are closed on the western end of Kangaroo Island for community safety. For updates go to www.traffic.sa.gov.au.
Flinders Chase National Park, Kelly Hill Caves and Seal Bay Conservation Park remain closed until further notice. See https://www.parks.sa.gov.au/know-before-you-go/closures-and-alerts.
For people who require assistance, an Emergency Relief centre is open from 7am to 7pm at the Kingscote Football Club, Centenary Avenue, Kingscote.
