Update for Kangaroo Island

ISSUED FOR RAVINE

CFS advises that the predicted weather for Kangaroo Island today is highly likely to cause breakouts at multiple points along the fire perimeter.

Please note that CFS warning messages issued today for Kangaroo Island are likely to cover large areas on the map and contain text descriptions of multiple areas of concern. It is vital that CFS Incident Updates and warnings are read in full as the area that affects you may be at the end of the message.

Overnight and into this morning, crews have been actively fighting outbreaks at Deep Creek Gully, Bark Hut and Yarda. These outbreaks remain uncontrolled.

The wind direction has already changed today and further changes are expected.
Northerly winds will persist through the early afternoon before a change to the north-west.
Westerly winds are forecast for the evening.

Each wind change will affect the direction of the fire. Strengthening late afternoon and early evening winds will increase how quickly the fire moves to the east.

Terrain will also determine the speed and distance the fire travels. If you are unfamiliar with the local landscape, you are advised to remain at the eastern side of the island.

ROAD CLOSURES:
All roads on the western side of Kangaroo Island are closed. This includes a line from Emu Bay to Seal Bay along Birchmore Road.
Roads that are currently open, including Playford Highway and Timber Creek Road, may become unsafe to travel as the fire progresses today. If you are planning to leave Parndana please consider leaving early whilst the roads are open and safe.

If you cannot leave, identify where you shall seek shelter from the fire. Heat from the fire will kill you. The safest place to take shelter is in a solid structure within a Safer Place. Bushfire Last Resort Refuges are open spaces with little or no facilities. It will be hot, smoky and uncomfortable. The space is large enough to provide protection from radiant heat and is preferable to being in your car. Your car is the least safe place to be when the firefront approaches.

Safer Places are the best option. Kangaroo Island Safer Places are in Kingscote and Penneshaw. For further information on Safer Places, check the CFS website https://www.cfs.sa.gov.au/site/prepare_for_a_fire/bushfire_safer_places.jsp

Do not enter the eastern end of Kangaroo Island as conditions are dangerous and constantly changing.

Fire is currently heading in a southerly direction toward Parndana.

The CFS advises everyone on Kangaroo Island to check and follow their Bushfire Survival Plan.
