Incident Update - Emergency Warning Messages Issued for Kangaroo Island

ISSUED FOR RAVINE

There are two Emergency Warning Messages for the Playford Hwy/West End Hwy Ravine fire:

1. Central Kangaroo Island - including the Parndana township, Cygnet River, Wisanger, Emu Bay and Kingscote Airport.

2. Vivonne Bay township near South Coast Road

There is a Watch and Act Message in place for Kingscote, Emu Bay, Nepean Bay, American River, Muston, Wilson Corner and Macgillivray.

There is a risk to life and property and it may be too dangerous to drive. These fires are burning out of control, having breached control lines.

Bushfire Safer Places are the best option. For further information on Bushfire Safer Places, check the CFS website https://www.cfs.sa.gov.au/site/prepare_for_a_fire/bushfire_safer_places.jsp.

Those choosing to leave their homes are advised to move towards Bushfire Safer Places of Kingscote or Penneshaw.

Put your Bushfire Survival Plan into action and stay informed.

If you cannot leave, identify where you will seek shelter from the fire. The safest place to take shelter is in a solid structure. Bushfire Last Resort Refuges are open spaces with little or no facilities. It will be hot, smokey and uncomfortable. The space is large enough to provide protection from radiant heat and is preferable to being in your car. Your car is the least safe place to be when the firefront approaches.

Do not enter the western end of Kangaroo Island as conditions are dangerous and constantly changing.

There is also a Bushfire Advice Message for the Playford Hwy/West End Hwy Ravine fire issued for the western side of Kangaroo Island from the south coast, approximately 12kms west of Vivonne Bay, to the east of Parndana and to the north coast at Stokes Bay.

The fire is travelling in a south easterly direction changing to an easterly direction in the evening.

The Ravine fire remains uncontrolled and unpredictable in nature and difficult for fire crews to control. Terrain will also determine the speed and distance the fire travels. If you are unfamiliar with the local landscape, you are advised to remain at the eastern side of the island.

ROAD CLOSURES:

All roads on the western side of Kangaroo Island are closed. This includes a line from Stokes Bay to Cygnet River along Birchmore Road to the south coast.

ROADS POTENTIALLY IMPACTED:

Include Playford Hwy, East West One Hwy, East West Two Hwy, South Coast Road, Airport Rd, Birchmore Road, Rowland Hill Hwy, Bomb Alley Rd, Ropers Rd, and Bark Hut Rd.

Road closures are continually being reviewed and may change with no notice. The most up to date information on road closures can be found at https://traffic.sa.gov.au/.
