Update for Kangaroo Island
ISSUED FOR RAVINE, KANGAROO ISLAND
The CFS advises the public that all previous and active fires on Kangaroo Island - including Duncan and Menzies - are referred to as the Ravine fire. Please note that any messages that are labelled as the Ravine fire contain information about fire across the entire island.
The eastern edge of the fire is stable, however there are several hot spots with potential for outbreak today in the following areas:Stokes Bay
Cygnet River
Vivonne Bay
Seal Bay
Seddon
Birchmore
There are currently two Bushfire Advice Messages in place.
The Bushfire Advice Message on the central part of the island includes Emu Bay, Cape Gantheaume Conservation Park and Vivonne Bay.
The Bushfire Advice Message on the western side of the island includes Flinders Chase National Park, Ravine de Casoars Wilderness Area and Parndana. This side of the island has already been impacted by the fires, however there are patches that remain unburnt as well as hotspots in places such as creek beds, gullies and in the roots and stumps of burnt trees.
Throughout the area, there are patches of uncontrolled fire and there is a large risk of falling trees within the fireground. Residents inside the fireground also need to be alert of hotspots and re-ignitions. Be aware that there will be numerous roots and stumps smouldering which may still cause fire outbreaks for many days or even weeks to come.
The public should also be aware of smoke in the area which may reduce visibility on the roads and cause concern for those with respiratory conditions.
This afternoon, winds are predicted to turn south to south westerly, before turning south to south easterly during the evening.
There are crews from CFS, MFS, Farm Fire Units and the Department of Environment and Water (DEW), which are actively working to contain fire activity. Pre-emptive work by Australian Army crews are continuing to support firefighting strategies and assist the SES and Salvation Army in the organisation of the base camp.
If the fire intensity increases, the level of warning messages will be upgraded to assist everyone on the island to understand their risk and enact their Bushfire Survival Plan.
Unburnt pockets of vegetation within the fire perimeter may still catch fire and have the potential to impact on property and other assets. There are a large number of triple zero calls regarding the Kangaroo Island fire. Please consider what the fire is doing and the threat to life and property prior to dialling triple zero. We are utilising multiple aircraft and ground observers to prioritise areas of the fire that require the attention of the fire services. If you see unattended fire, please call triple zero (000).
The identified Bushfire Safer Places for the Island are the townships of Kingscote and Penneshaw. Bushfire Last Resort Refuges are open spaces with little or no facilities.
