ROAD CLOSURE UPDATE FOR KANGAROO ISLAND

ISSUED FOR RAVINE

CFS is pleased to announce that around the clock assessments of Kangaroo Island roads by multiple agencies has resulted in some key roads being more accessible.
Roads that are now tier 3 roads are:

  • Shackle Road
  • South Coast Road from Seal Bay Road to Shackle Road and
  • Playford Highway from Parndana to Shackle Road.

Seal Bay Road and Hanson Bay Road are now tier 2 roads.

What are the access tiers?

Roads closed at tier 1 level can only be accessed by Emergency Services.

At tier 2, access is extended to essential services conducting assessment and restoration activities and to media with a CFS escort.

Tier 3 access allows Bona Fide local residents who wish to return to assess their property and/or stock as well as relief and recovery services. Accredited media may use the road without CFS escort.

Residents who are returning to their properties are strongly advised that roads are likely to be very different to what they were before the fire. Roads familiar to you will look, feel and drive differently and extra care will be needed. Drivers may find that roads are slippery and have loose edges. There is potential danger of trees and tree limbs falling onto roads which may unexpectedly block a previously cleared road. Extreme caution is advised and access along these roads should still only be undertaken by residents returning to their own property. For the safety of local residents, emergency services, army and recovery workers, unless travel on these roads is vital, please wait until roads are declared fully open.
