REDHILL

Wind Turbine Fire

A fire has destroyed a turbine and burnt approximately 30 hectares of grass on a wind turbine farm in Redhill.

Six CFS crews supported by Farm Fire Units are working on back burning around the wind tower to prevent further grass fires from starting this afternoon. This fire is presenting no current risk to the public however, smoke may be seen over surrounding area while firefighters burn the grass from around the tower.

Firefighters are working in hilly terrain and with an exclusion zone to support firefighter safety from collapsing wind turbine making suppression tactics slower than normal.
The firefighters are staying on top of spot fires being created by falling debris while remaining clear from the turbine collapse zone.

The estimated damage amount of the impacted turbine is $2.2 million. The cause of the fire is currently unknown and will be investigated once the turbine can be safely dismantled.
