Tooperang Grassfire
The SA Country Fire Service (CFS) is on scene at a bushfire at Tooperang, 5 kilometres east of Mount Compass in the Southern Fleurieu Peninsula of South Australia.
The fire is contained, after burning more than 685 hectares in scrub, grass and plantation since Sunday afternoon.
Today, 60 fire fighters and 20 fire trucks continued to work to strengthen containment lines and mop up hot spots. This fire will continue to be closely monitored by CFS and National Parks fire fighters especially given the upcoming predicted weather over the long weekend.
Firefighters will continue to work on the fireground throughout the night, working to maintain and strengthen control lines.
Additional support has been ongoing by the Department for Environment and Water, St John Ambulance, Salvation Army, Alexandrina council, private contractors, farm fire units, Forestry SA, SA Ambulance Service, SA Metropolitan Fire Service, State Emergency Service, the Department of Primary Industries and Regions (PIRSA) and the South Australian Police. Once again, the CFS would like to thank the numerous local community groups who have shown their support with food and supplies to local crews during this challenging time.
Numerous properties were saved during initial firefighting efforts, a testament to the outstanding work of our Volunteers, farm fire units and supporting partner agencies.
PIRSA and Wildlife rescue, damage assessment and fire cause investigators attended the scene during the day. A native animal review completed by Department of Environment and Water showed most native animals were able to escape the impact of the fire.
Roads are now open in the area. Emergency services will be working on and around roads in the area, and motorists are advised to stay away. If you need to travel on roads in the area, please take care and drive to the local conditions.
Residents may see some smoke during night, conditions may change quickly and remain dangerous. Crews will continue to remain on the fireground throughout the night.
