Tooperang Bushfire

CFS crews are commencing day 8 of continuous response to a bushfire at Tooperang, 5 kilometres east of Mount Compass in the Southern Fleurieu Peninsula of South Australia.

The fire remains controlled after burning through more than 685 hectares since Sunday 18 January, 2026. Throughout the week approximately 800 firefighters on 245 trucks have undertaken demanding work in very hot conditions and hard to access terrain to stop the spread of the fire.

Yesterday saw an increased patrolling presence on the fireground due to the extreme fire conditions experienced however, thankfully there were no reignitions or significant issues on the Tooperang fireground.

Due to the expected elevated fire conditions over the coming days firefighters will continue to monitor and patrol the fireground to secure any new hotspots within the burnt area. This fire currently poses no risk to community and firefighting presence is a precaution to mitigate any risks of reignition.

During this incident the fireground operations have been supported by an Incident Management Team consisting primarily of volunteers who have provided oversight of this incident day and night to ensure the safety and welfare of ground crews and the community.

Crews have been supported by firebombing aircraft which have completed in excess of 166 drops, equivalent to dispersing 473,100 litres of extinguishing agents onto the fire.

Throughout this incident the CFS has been supported by the South Australia Police, SA Metropolitan Fire Service, SA State Emergency Service, South Australian Ambulance Service, SA Water, Department for Environment and Water, Forestry SA, St Johns Ambulance, Salvation Army, private heavy plant contractors, farm fire units, local community groups and business. The CFS thanks all those who have supported the firefighting and incident management operations.

The community is reminded this is still an active fireground and the everyone is urged to stay away where possible. This includes the use of drones in and around the fireground which is prohibited and dangerous to our aircraft.

Hazardous and falling trees may pose a risk in the area, especially due to strong winds and hot weather predicted over the coming days. The community it urged to be cautious when driving in the area. Roads remain open around the incident, however this may change at short notice. The community are encouraged to take care when driving in the area as some smoke may remain and emergency services will be working on and around roads. Continue to monitor road closures at: traffic.sa.gov.au

Fantastic efforts by everyone involved in the Tooperang fire have been vital in ensuring the communities safety over the last 8 days and we thank all CFS members and partner agencies for their tireless work to support the fire response. Without your unwavering support, hard work and dedication, we would not have been able to control this fire as rapidly in the conditions that have been experienced.
