Back burn concern
09/01/2020
SA Country Fire Service (CFS) has used the technique of back burning in the past few days to strengthen control lines on the Ravine fire on Kangaroo Island.
This technique has been used to burn vegetation in mild conditions in an effort to control the fire ahead of today's Severe conditions.
For the past five days, there has been a CFS imposed Total Fire Ban issued for Kangaroo Island.
Ravine fire Incident Controller, Ian Tanner, is reminding those assisting with the fire not to light a back burn without prior approval.
"Although we often use back burning as a method to fight fires, there is meticulous planning that goes into these burns before they are lit," Incident Controller Tanner said.
"We also deploy many resources to ensure the fire is well controlled."
Today there will be no back burning in place due to increased winds forecast.
Anyone found to be lighting a fire to back burn around the Ravine fireground today may be charged by SA Police.
