Check weather conditions before burn-off

22/10/2012

The Country Fire Service (CFS) is urging property owners to refrain from burning-off towards the middle of the week when weather conditions are expected to change.

This follows Bureau of Meteorology forecasts for strong wind for the West Coast, Lower Eyre Peninsula and south-east regions tomorrow and Wednesday.

CFS State Coordinator Brenton Eden said a number of burn-offs on private rural properties have been taking place throughout South Australia ahead of the start of the Fire Danger Season.

The North East and North West Pastoral Districts are the only two fire ban districts so far that are in the 2012/13 Fire Danger Season, with the remaining 13 districts yet to start their seasons.

"We welcome farmers who are proactive with their responsibilities to reduce fuel loads on their properties and minimise the risk of grass or bushfires this season," Mr Eden said.

"However I do urge caution when contemplating a burn-off by appealing to property owners to review the weather forecasts ahead of any burn."

Some farmers are taking advantage of mild weather conditions to conduct burn-offs on their properties but those in the pastoral districts will need a permit for their burn-offs.

"Property owners in the North East and North West pastoral districts must also satisfy their notification obligations as part of their permit requirements," Mr Eden said.

Residents in any areas affected by smoke are advised to close doors and windows until the smoke passes.

Those travelling in the vicinity of the smoke should exercise caution as it may reduce visibility.
