Curramulka fire continues to burn on Yorke Peninsula

7/12/2012

Country Fire Service ((CFS) crews are continuing to monitor a bushfire north of Minlaton on Yorke Peninsula.

A reduced threat has now been issued for this fire which was first reported just before 1pm at the corner of Gunbarrel and Butlers Road, about eight kilometres west of Curramulka.

Five aerial water bombers had been assisting about 180 CFS firefighters, 39 fire trucks and several farm appliances on the ground while attempting to contain the fire.

At one stage it moved rapidly south towards Minlaton, destroying a hay shed and has burnt about 555 hectares.

An Emergency Alert notification was also issued to people in the surrounding Minlaton area, through mobile phone texts and landline messages.

The Minlaton to Maitland Road remains closed to all traffic in both directions with SAPOL diverting all vehicles to other roads.

Local residents are advised that although the threat has now been reduced, to be aware that some risks may still be present, including smoke that may reduce visibility, falling trees and embers.
