BANGOR FIRE INTENSIFIES

10/02/2014

The fire activity at Bangor has intensified, with increased fire activity occurring on the eastern flank of the ranges approximately 8km west of Laura in the Wirrabara Forest, and within the Beetaloo catchment area.

Flame heights of 50 metres have been observed as the fire burns through dense scrubland in complex terrain, travelling in a southerly and easterly direction.

The fire has broken control lines on the eastern flank of the fire, and firefighters are utilising heavy plant equipment to join the fire breaks between the scrubland and the townships.

CFS crews are focussing on protecting life and property and actively fighting the fire front where possible, with support from firebombing aircraft.

Residents and visitors are advised to stay alert and aware of the fire situation by staying tuned to local radio, checking the CFS website and CFS social media pages, as conditions may change quickly.

An Emergency Warning message and Emergency Alert has been issued for Laura, Gladstone and the Beetaloo Valley areas.

There following road closures are currently in place: Possum Park Road, Clogg Road, Rucioch Road Laura, Marners Road, Sunnyvale Road, Collaby Hill road at Augusta Highway (the scenic drive through Laura), Charcoal Road Wirrabara, Beetaloo Road Beetaloo, and Forest Road/Hollitt Road in Wirrabara.
