Statewide Fire Update

17/01/2014

Firefighters from the SA Country Fire Service, Department of Environment, Water and Natural Resources and Forestry SA are continuing to work on 16 fires that have continued to burn overnight.

Currently we have 700 firefighters, 200 appliances supported by 80 farm fire units deployed across the state as well as a large number of Incident Management personnel managing these incidents.

The Bangor fire near Port Germain in the states mid north continues to pose the biggest threat and has the highest concentration of resources committed. Crews have been tasked to asset protection and monitoring the fire edge in difficult and sometime inaccessible terrain.

SA Metropolitan Fire Service Firefighters will be deployed to Port Pirie by 9am this morning to assist with asset protection. A Watch and Act Message is current for this fire.

We also have Bushfire Advice Messages active for fires at Kiana on the Lower Eyre Peninsula, Billiatt north of Lameroo, Yumbarra Conservation Park due north of Ceduna, Gawler Ranges National Park north of Wudinna and the complex of fires in Ngarkat Conservation Park south of Lameroo.

In total approximately 100 000 hectares of grass, scrub and bushland has been burnt across the state.

Today's weather will see continued high temperatures and increased wind moving through the state which may hamper firefighting efforts on the firegrounds. Crews will continue to work throughout the day on all fires to establish and strengthen control lines.

Firebombing aircraft will continue to be used across the state including the addition five resources sourced from Queensland, New South Wales and Victoria.
