Fire warning to residents

17/10/2017

SA Country Fire Service (CFS) is warning residents not to be complacent, with fire crews being called to several escaped burn offs in the past week.

State Duty Commander Nik Stanley said the warm, windy weather we're experiencing has resulted in several unattended burn offs escaping, or rekindling.

"Although it's good to see people cleaning up their properties ahead of the Fire Danger Season, we're seeing an increased number of vegetation pile burns spreading," Mr Stanley said.

"Vegetation dries out quickly at this time of year and although some fuels look green, they're still able to burn.

"People need to ensure they have cleared a four metre break of all flammable material around the fire and have sufficient water supply on hand to extinguish the fire should it spread.

"The fire should be monitored for a 24 to 48 hour period following the burn, to ensure it has not escaped and is completely extinguished."

The warning comes as the Fire Danger Season dates for 10 fire ban districts are announced, with the Mid North, Yorke Peninsula and Riverland fire ban districts starting two weeks earlier than usual.

The Eastern Eyre Peninsula, Flinders, Mid North, Riverland, West Coast and Yorke Peninsula will all commence the Fire Danger Season on November 1. The Murraylands and Upper South East begin on November 15 and the Lower South East on November 22.

The Fire Danger Season began in the North West Pastoral and North East Pastoral districts on Sunday. Dates for the Adelaide Metropolitan, Mount Lofty Ranges and Kangaroo Island are yet to be announced.
