Shed fire at Colebatch - 22 January 2025
At 9:30pm, three trucks carrying approximately 15 volunteer firefighters attended a hay shed fire at Colebatch, located 70 kilometres southeast of Meningie in the state’s Coorong region.
Upon arrival, firefighters found a hay shed fully involved in fire that was spreading away from the structure into nearby grass.
With the support of Farm Firefighting Units, CFS volunteers stopped the grass fire from spreading but, unfortunately, could not prevent the hay shed’s destruction.
The fire is contained but, due to the shed’s roof collapsing, it is unsafe for firefighters to enter, extract the hay, and spread it out to extinguish fully until the morning.
The property owner will monitor the fire overnight to ensure it does not escape.
The shed was also storing farm machinery including tractors, a boom sprayer, stock trailer and a header, all of which was destroyed.
Total damage to the shed and equipment is estimated at $650,000.
Fire Cause will investigate.
