House fire in Belalie North - Tuesday 20
CFS crews have responded to a fire, early this morning at a house – which is the former general store of Belalie North - about 15 kilometres north-east of Jamestown in the state’s Mid North.
When crews arrived, the house was fully involved in flames and the occupants were out the front. It is believed one of them tried to put out the fire in its early stages and they had to be treated by SA Ambulance for smoke inhalation and lacerations.
18 firefighters from Gladstone, Yongala and Jamestown employed defensive firefighting tactics in order to stop the fire from spreading to neighbouring buildings and farmland with valuable crops.
Some crew members, using Breathing Apparatus also managed to cool down three 45-kilogram gas cylinders which prevented the fire from causing a major explosion at the site.
Unfortunately, the historical building on Belalie North Road was destroyed and losses are estimated at upwards of $350,000.
Crews will remain on scene to extinguish any hot spots. They are also supported by SA Police and expect Fire investigators to arrive later this morning to help establish the cause of the blaze.
