$500,000 truck fire at Waikerie - 29 June 2022

Just before 2:30pm this afternoon CFS crews responded to a B-double truck fire on the Sturt Highway, approximately 6kms east of Waikerie in the state’s Riverland.

Thankfully the driver of the truck escaped unharmed, and was able to notify authorities of the fire. On arrival, crews found the prime mover of the B-double truck fully alight.

Four CFS crews from Waikerie and Moorook worked to extinguish the fire, which was contained to the prime mover, although there was some damage to the front trailer as well.

The truck is understood to have been transporting frozen vegetables, and whilst a cause is not confirmed at this time, it is believed to have been started by an electrical fault.

Whilst the damage bill is approximately $500,000, thanks to the quick work of CFS crews, around $200,000 worth of property and goods were saved.

Sturt Highway east of Waikerie will remain partially closed whilst crews mop up and the trailers are removed. We ask that motorists in the area factor in additional travel time to accommodate any potential delays whilst emergency services remain on scene.
