Hay fire at Lameroo - November 3

Friday, November 3 at 2.50pm:

Just before 1.30pm CFS crews were called to a fire in hay shed at Billiatt Road, Lameroo.

On arrival crews found the structure fully involved with fire. The structure and hay was destroyed, and crews worked to stop the fire spreading to a nearby diesel tank.

The fire is expected to burn for several days and smoke will drift along the local area and roads.

The estimated damage bill is $150,000.

The cause is currently unknown but is thought to be spontaneous combustion.

This is the second hay fire CFS has attended today, so it serves as a reminder to farmers to check the moisture content of hay before baling.

If there are signs that the hay is starting to heat once baled, pull the stack apart to improve airflow and allow the bales to cool.
