Renewable energy developments may need to meet specific fire safety, access, and bushfire resilience requirements. We have developed a Guide to help operators, designers and developers understand the key considerations for planning, constructing and managing large‑scale solar, wind and Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) facilities.
When a development application is referred to the CFS, the CFS Development Assessment Service reviews the proposal and provides advice. Considerations include siting, vegetation management, access for emergency service vehicles, fire water supply, emergency planning, and measures to reduce fire ignition and spread across renewable energy infrastructure sites.
We will ask all proponents to consider this Guide and its checklist before submitting their application to the CFS for review. Proponents should clearly articulate how they address all the requirements. The Guide:
- outlines the minimum expectations for safe design and operation
- supports the preparation of planning applications
- helps ensure facilities can be safely accessed and managed during an emergency.
